The buzz surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously flexible, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
